Welcome to Paul’s Porch Pots

Specializing in the Repurposing of Maple Syrup Buckets!

My name is Paul Marshall and I’m a 37 year old husband and father of 2 boys and 1 girl. I grew up on a dairy farm in Rice Lake, Wisconsin. I have been designing and cutting maple syrup buckets since fall of 2017. Prior to buckets, I had been collecting sap for a local sugar bush which is what led me to the idea of repurposing vintage buckets and other metals.

What are Maple Syrup Buckets?

Maple syrup buckets are tin buckets built to collect sap.  Buckets are an “old fashioned” way of collecting maple sap.  Tin buckets replaced wooden buckets over a century ago.  Each spring a hole is drilled into the maple trees and a tap is placed in the hole.  A bucket is then hung from the tap and the sap drips into the bucket. The sap is then collected from the buckets by hand with a team of horses and a sleigh.  It’s then brought to a sugar shack where it’s boiled down to maple syrup. It takes about forty gallons of maple sap to make one gallon of maple syrup.
